STRAIT OF MAGELLAN

The Strait of Magellan is a maritime passage located in the extreme south of Chile, between Patagonia, the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego and several islands located west of it towards the Pacific Ocean. Until the construction of the Panama Canal, it was the main passage between both oceans and gave rise to a great commercial and industrial development in the area. It is currently one of the most emblematic elements of southern Chile, full of history and resources on which to project one of the most fascinating trips to this corner of the planet.

On October 21, 1520, Ferdinand Magellan, Captain General of the Spanish fleet, who was touring the eastern coast of South America, discovered a cape behind which was a large entrance to the sea. On November 1, 1520, after exploring the entrance to the sea, Magellan entered the strait called “All Saints” because that day the Catholic Church celebrates that holiday.
