After receiving the concession of one million hectares in the area of Magallanes, Nogueira died of tuberculosis at the age of 48 and left a great fortune to Sara, who knew how to take care of it and manage it very well.

In 1895, the beautiful and powerful widow of Nogueira completed the construction of the palace her husband had ordered five years earlier to the French architect Numa Mayer, who drew the plans following the canons of taste prevailing in Paris at the end of the 19th century. The exuberance of the palace contrasted with the simple private homes of the area at that time. All materials, furniture and style details were transported by boat from Europe.

It has an exquisite façade and a winter garden with a metallic structure not common at that time.

Currently the palace is occupied by the Hotel José Nogueira, as well as being the headquarters of the Union Club of Punta Arenas and the Restaurant La Taberna.
